I have worked in financial institutions for around 5 years.
My primary job scope is to develop VBA applications (Excel, Access), but of course there's always that "secondary duty",
which include managing SQL Server applications, SQL Server migration, training, user support, even doing the dreary
Month-End closing, which typically runs till 5am.

In financial institutions, there is always a need for highly proficient VBA programmers (though usually only ONE in each
department; sometimes one for the whole company). That said, it means that a VBA Programmer, while not that highly
valued, is a critical and essential member of the team. That means earning a good salary too.

In my last position in a bank, I developed Excel VBA programs to:
* generate Trial Balance
* generate P&L Statements
* generate Cash Adequacy Reports
* collate and present invest valuation reports
* and many more

…and all of these get to the hands of clients comprising of
* Sovereign Wealth Funds
* Insurance funds
* Pension funds
* Institutional funds

My proudest moment was to completely redevelop an application for billing the Australian govt for managing their various
investment accounts. It was redeveloped from a very basic billing spreadsheet into a secure, user-controlled application with
change logging and roll-back capabilities, The development process include dial-in conference with the govt, as well as
spending face time in Melbourne to complete the development.

There is always a need for VBA programmers in every organization – particularly Excel VBA. The problem is that many
employers are unaware of the potential of this programming language, having the misconception that "important" applications
must be created in C# or Java or whatever language they happen to have heard of. VBA programming always fly under the
radar because they are never used to create enterprise systems – which gets the big funding.

Here are some non-financial organizations that I have developed applications for in VBA:
US Navy – Access, SQL Server: MIS system (later redeveloped into a real-time online system after 9/11)
US Navy – Access; Cheque management system
US Navy – Access: Legal Cases database
SPANS (now re-branded HomeTeamNS) – Access: membership database, chalet booking, facilities booking, NS Pay deduction, daily cash collection
Dell Global BV – Access, SQL Server: Warranty Resolution Application (Printers, Display)
Siemens Advanced Engineering – Access: Inventory, Internal Requisition, Purchasing
BHP-Billiton – Excel: Forecasting application
BHP-Billiton – Excel: Forecasting Roll-over utility
Standard Chartered Bank – Access: several applications for the Middle Office
Standard Chartered Bank – Access: several applications for Wholesale Banking, Product Control
XL Results Foundation – Access: Integrated Cash-flow, Billing, Activity Management
Northern Trust – Excel: numerous financial reporting applications
Air Products & Chemicals, Inc – Access, SQL Server: Data cleansing, data transformation, error resolution
Air Products & Chemicals, Inc – Excel: data transformation for Open PO

Which organizations need VBA Programmers?
1. All financial institutions (banks, insurance, fund managers, etc)
2. All business entities that have a finance department (that's all companies, except sole-proprietorship)
…so that covers just about all types of businesses.
