I am fairly proficient with excel – having gone through formal classes and used it extensively during a time when I was doing reporting and analytical work. I would say it is useful but not greatly valued; especially for larger companies and MNC where commercial tools are widely available – i.e. SFDC, Tableau etc.

If you are interviewing for an analyst job, interviewers may ask about your ability to use pivot tables and simple excel formulas; not so much on being able to build macros.
